Women of the Akola Project - Stories of Faith and Perseverance

Mothers of a Nation - Widows of Uganda

Mothers of a Nation - Widows of Uganda

Widows are the backbone of Uganda and are some of the most powerful members of their communities.

Despite many personal hardships including AIDS, hunger, and poverty, women are responsible for caring for their families and communities.

UAPO believes that the best way to care for orphaned and disadvantaged children in rural villages is to empower a woman.

Difficulties to Overcome

Difficulties to Overcome

Most women in rural Uganda are subsistence farmers who dig in their gardens to provide minimal food for their families.

Women lack basic income to meet the needs of their families including medical care, school fees, mosquito nets, and food.

Frequent externalities such as drought and curable illnesses cause hardships and death. One fourth of UAPO’s Akola women have HIV.

The Solution with Sustainable Income

Our Solution with Sustainable Income

The Ugandan American Partnership Organization (UAPO) seeks to help women through the Akola Project by creating a small scale business environment.

Widows are trained to make crafts that UAPO sells to generate a sustainable income for the women and their families.

Most women use their Akola wages to buy food, medical care and to pay school fees for their families and needy children in the village.

Working with Love

Working in Love

In Uganda’s local Lusoga dialect the word Akola means to work in the spirit of love.

Through the power of love and hard work, UAPO joins Ugandans and Americans together to provide relief to struggling, courageous, and faithful women of Uganda.

Become an Akola ambassador and help Ugandan communities in need.
